Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is a globally unique university. Our combined focus on research excellence and inclusion sets us apart world-wide. We are a values-led institution with a strong brand identity centered on inclusion. Our new University Research Institutes (URIs) are flagship initiatives under our ambitious Strategy 2030, convening thematic and multidisciplinary research excellence to tackle questions of international importance.

The Digital Environment Research Institute (DERI) is Queen Mary’s first University Research Institute. It is dedicated to ground-breaking research in Digital and Data Science, including Artificial Intelligence (AI). DERI offers an outstanding research environment including a dedicated physical space along with recently purchased high performance computing infrastructure to enable scientific breakthroughs. DERI also leads the university’s participation in The Alan Turing Institute, the UK national institute for Data Science and AI.  By tackling grand challenges, DERI will have impact in academia, government, industry and more broadly, society.

We now seek to appoint an exceptional individual as Professor of AI in Biomedicine and Healthcare. In this role, you will be a key member of the DERI leadership team, contributing to our development, as well as inspiring, and leading on expanding research in this space to deliver outstanding, interdisciplinary research impact. We consider AI in Biomedicine and Healthcare in the broadest of terms, from discovery to translation. Our areas of interest include Computational Medicine, Healthcare Digital Twins, Health Data Science, Synthetic Healthcare Data, Multi-omics Data Analysis, AI for Drug Discovery, Predictive Systems, with relevant approaches such as Machine and Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, and/or Bioinformatics.

This role is a research-intensive professorship, with minimal, if any, teaching responsibilities, and will head up one of the primary research platforms for the Institute. We are therefore looking for candidates with an internationally renowned academic track record of high-quality research in the fields of AI in Biomedicine, Healthcare, or Bioinformatics. You will have a successful track record of attracting substantial research funding and leading major collaborative projects that deliver tangible impact. A collegiate and positive team player, you will energise and inspire stakeholders at all levels and positively contribute to the strategic growth of the Institute.

This is a very exciting time to join as DERI continues to expand, and you will have the opportunity to conduct world-class research whilst also feeding into, and helping to steer the growth, and evolution of the Institute, and AI, Digital, and Data Science research at Queen Mary, and more widely. The post comes with a generous package to facilitate the growth of your research group, and the forging of collaborations, enabling you to seamlessly establish yourself at DERI.

Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability. We are open to considering applications from candidates wishing to work flexibly.
