Location: London
Salary: An attractive remuneration package
UCL is a world leading, global university with a community of more than 50,000 students from 150 countries and over 16,000 staff which pursues academic excellence, breaks boundaries, and makes a positive impact on real world problems. We are consistently ranked among the top ten universities in the world and are one of only a handful of institutions rated as having the strongest academic reputation. We are ambitious for change and are committed to taking ever bolder and more impactful interventions towards becoming a more diverse, equitable and inclusive university. UCL has recently outlined its approach to transformational change to ensure a sustainable future against a background of financial, sector and geo-political challenges currently facing higher education today, the full detail of which can be found in UCL’s Strategic Plan 2022-2027.
As we approach our bicentennial in 2026, we seek a visionary leader for the Faculty of Social & Historical Sciences (SHS) to lead the faculty’s strategic vision for this coming decade as well as the development of its research, teaching and innovation activities. Supported by eight academic Vice-Deans and a Director of Operations, you will be responsible for more than 5,500 students and circa 1,000 members of staff; three quarters of which are academic, teaching and research staff, and one quarter professional services.
Intellectually diverse and widely regarded as world leading, with three of our subject areas ranked in the top 10 globally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, the faculty is renowned for its excellence in teaching and research. We foster a vibrant culture of innovation; from tackling climate change to addressing economic inequality, our academics, alumni, and students are dedicated to exploring new ways to address pressing global issues.
Responsible for the strategic leadership and management of the Faculty of SHS, you will contribute to the delivery of strategic objectives and will be a recognised academic leader in your discipline. Responsible to Council, via the Vice Provost (Faculties) and the Provost, for the organisation and general conduct of the faculty, you will champion interdisciplinary collaboration, advancing research and teaching excellence, and fostering an inclusive, diverse academic environment.
This is a unique opportunity to lead a vibrant faculty within one of the world’s top universities. You will demonstrate exceptional academic and strategic leadership capability and a commitment to furthering the faculty’s global research standing. You will have significant experience of effectively participating in the administration of a large, complex organisation and a proven ability to create an ambitious, forward-looking vision. An inspiring and collegiate leader, you will be decisive and results-oriented, with the ability to encourage participation, responsibility and accountability.
