Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is a globally unique university. Our combined focus on research excellence and inclusion sets us apart world-wide. Our new University Research Institutes are flagship initiatives under our ambitious Strategy 2030, convening thematic and multidisciplinary research excellence to tackle questions of international importance.

The new Precision Healthcare University Research Institute (PHURI) will develop better care through data-driven medicine. PHURI will unite world-leading expertise from Queen Mary’s, nationally and internationally to drive research excellence and expedite impact. Our multidisciplinary teams will address four interconnected research themes: Health Data and Analytics; Omics Science; MedTech and Devices; and Therapeutic Innovation. These themes will come together to create a complete journey from disease identification, through the development of a therapy, intervention or device, to translation for patients in the clinic. This integrated approach is a distinguishing feature of PHURI.

PHURI will be housed in the brand-new purpose-built Queen Mary Life Sciences Building, a hub for innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship which will form part of the larger developing Whitechapel Life Sciences Cluster.

We are now seeking to appoint an exceptional Chair and Academic Lead for our Health Data and Analytics Centre. You will drive research in this area for PHURI, working with other academic leaders from PHURI and across Queen Mary’s to integrate Health Data and Analytics research with other thematic foci for PHURI to aid the prediction, prognosis and prevention of disease, and provide tools to monitor treatments and interventions. You will work closely with Barts Health NHS Trust to ensure that our research is focused on where it’s needed most, using real-world clinical data to drive the development and targeted prescription of treatments based on patients’ needs.

This role is a research-intensive professorship and one of four key strategic academic appointments to PHURI. We are therefore looking for candidates with an internationally renowned academic track record of high-quality research in the field of health data analysis and/or bioinformatics. You will bring a strong vision and collaborative approach which will enable you to build on research across QMUL and the other PHURI Centres. You will have a successful track record of attracting substantial research funding and leading major collaborative projects that deliver tangible impact. A collegiate and positive team player, you will energise and inspire stakeholders at all levels and positively contribute to the strategic growth of the Institute.

The post comes with a generous package to facilitate the growth of your research group, and the forging of collaborations, enabling you to seamlessly establish yourself at PHURI. This role provides you with exceptional scope to define the research strategy in this area and lead its delivery, working closely with the PHURI Director. There is also the opportunity for a clinical honorary appointment with the relevant specialty.

Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability. We are open to considering applications from candidates wishing to work flexibly.
