The UK’s independent nuclear deterrent is essential to our nation’s security. Since 1969, the Royal Navy has maintained Continuous At-Sea Deterrence with at least one nuclear-armed submarine on patrol at all times.

The Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO) plays a central role in delivering the underpinning capabilities required to deliver the Ministry of Defence’s nuclear deterrent programme. With an annual budget of around £7 billion, the DNO is responsible for one of the largest capital budgets in Defence, delivering the nuclear infrastructure, equipment and people in providing development, delivery, storage and disposal of its complex assets.
