Appointments to commence in July 2020, or sooner

De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) is a dynamic, forward-looking and globally aware university. In 2020, we are marking 150 years of teaching that transforms lives. We continue to develop a strong reputation founded on proven academic quality, a clear focus on graduate careers, and on international impact and collaboration that extends across university life and study. The student experience and high-quality teaching are of paramount importance and we remain justly proud to hold a ‘Gold’ ranking in the Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework.

Following events in 2019, the university agreed an action plan for improved governance with our regulator, the Office for Students. A raft of new measures have been put in place by the Board of Governors and the Executive Board and an independent review of governance arrangements has been carried out. Much effort has also been taken to rebuild confidence around the university, and a major programme of work to re-examine and reconstruct the university’s governance arrangements is well underway. In the daily life of DMU our teaching and the quality of the student experience remain our focus. Meanwhile the university’s research work, international relationships, financial performance and academic results remain in robust health.

We are now looking to appoint up to six outstanding individuals with a strong sense of public commitment and a passion for the values DMU holds dear, to support the university to continue to grow its contribution to society, both nationally and internationally.

As a member of the board, you can expect to play a key role in driving the university’s ambitions forward, helping to shape its strategic mission and values at a key moment in its history alongside a new Vice-Chancellor, the recruitment process for which is currently ongoing. As a ‘critical friend’ to the executive, you will also be required to provide a check and balance, ensuring it is managed effectively and efficiently.

Prospective Governors should be innovative thinkers, with an ability and willingness to make a significant strategic contribution to board discussions and the business the board needs also to transact between meetings. You will have an interest in the issues affecting the higher education sector, strong commercial acumen and a freshness of insight that will enable DMU to realise its vision of becoming the definition of a 21st-century global university. Though further details are included in our recruitment pack, we are particularly interested in candidates with a strong background in:

  • Finance

  • Law

  • HR

  • New technologies

  • Higher education

  • Understanding of the Ofsted framework, in particular in relation to Adult Education programmes and Apprenticeships

While we hope you will bring a good level of experience of operating at non-executive director level, we are also able to consider those for whom this would be their first board position.

It is essential that these appointments are individuals of the highest calibre and standing in their particular discipline or field, that have a willingness to give the time required to contribute effectively to the work of the board and university. We are keen to achieve a balance between those who are local to the City of Leicester and the East Midlands region and those that live or work further afield.

De Montfort University is committed to achieving and promoting equality and diversity and welcome applications from all sections of the community, particularly underrepresented groups.
