The Church of England is committed to the care and protection of children, young people and vulnerable adults involved in Church activities. In the past few years safeguarding in the Church has significantly changed with the establishment of a National Safeguarding Team (NST) in 2015. The NST’s role is to support the dioceses, parishes, churches and worshipping communities to be safer places for all, and to promote good safeguarding practice as integral to the mission of the whole Church. The NST also leads the Church of England’s engagement with the Government’s Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse.

As part of an ongoing wider restructuring of the Church’s safeguarding provision we now wish to appoint a National Director of Safeguarding. He or she will be a member of the Archbishops’ Council’s senior management team and will play a pivotal role in developing a stronger national approach to safeguarding and strengthening the consistency and quality of the Church’s response. The postholder will provide strategic leadership and management of the NST and will work closely with the National Safeguarding Steering Group to ensure clear strategic direction and vision.

This will be a challenging and demanding, yet exceptionally rewarding, role. You will bring deep safeguarding expertise at the most senior level in high profile, complex, multi-stakeholder environments. You will be an accomplished change manager with a proven track record of successfully leading transformation, driving innovation and delivering substantial improvements to safeguarding strategy, policy and practice. An inspiring leader, you will also have outstanding stakeholder, relationship management and influencing skills, the highest levels of integrity and proven ability and willingness to challenge constructively.
