Job description Date posted: 01/03/2019

Location: Flexible, with travel to London, the Oxford-Cambridge Arc and further afield

The Oxford-Cambridge Arc is one of the greatest opportunities for economic growth in Europe. Stretching for 130 miles from Cambridgeshire to Oxfordshire via Milton Keynes, the Arc contains some of the most productive and innovative places in the UK, delivering growth and prosperity for the whole country. It is a globally significant place and has the potential to become even greater. It is already home to 3.7 million people and over 2 million jobs and contributes £111 billion of annual gross value added to the UK economy.

Infrastructure development is critical to the future success and competitiveness of the Arc and the Government has announced plans to complete both a new East West Rail Link and an Oxford to Cambridge Expressway to support maximising the potential of the area and cement the UK’s position as a world leader in science, technology and related fields. The government also recognises that a strategy that integrates place-making with infrastructure is essential for the area to achieve sustainable progress and has an ambition for up to one million high quality new homes across the Arc by 2050.

We are now seeking to appoint an Independent Business Chair for the Arc. This is a critically important, high-profile role that will help deliver the Government’s vision for the Arc. The Chair will provide expert advice to the Government and local stakeholders, act as an advocate, and champion economic opportunities to help galvanise local, national and international support for the Arc. They will also chair and lead a new Cross-Arc Advisory Group that is being set up to bring together key stakeholders from across the Arc.

This is a rare opportunity to create real impact on one of the most important infrastructure and economic development projects in the UK. You will be a highly effective board level operator and an astute business leader. You will bring a significant track record of operating in a globally competitive environment, with a strong understanding of international markets. You will have outstanding influencing skills at the highest level and the ability to drive forward a clear strategic vision in a high-profile and politically sensitive environment.
