DIT helps UK businesses to export, secures inward and outward investment, negotiates market access and trade agreements and champions free trade. The work of the department has never been more crucial. For the first time in over 40 years we have an independent trade policy, with our department responsible for building the capability to use this to take advantage of the opportunities presented through leaving the EU. Our Export Strategy sets out how government supports businesses of all sizes to make the most of the opportunities presented by markets around the world.

Latin America and the Caribbean are vitally important trade and investment partners for the United Kingdom. This is a large and complex region: São Paulo State is by itself a G20-scale economy. We are now seeking a motivated a talented professional to play a pivotal role in this relationship.

This is a high-profile, exciting and critical post. The HM Trade Commissioner for Latin America and the Caribbean (LATAC) is responsible for all DIT activity in these diverse and complex areas. You will also have responsibility as HM Consul-General for São Paulo, travelling extensively across the region to promote the UK Government’s prosperity work across the whole region in areas such as the prosperity fund, decarbonisation, science and innovation and defence. The role attracts much Whitehall interest, with regular Ministerial, Royal and VIP visits. The post-holder will be required to help grow the economic and commercial relationship between the UK & LATAC by: influencing the respective governments, attracting high quality foreign direct investment; driving high-value campaigns for exports and projecting the right image and brand for the UK.

This role presents a unique challenge and we are looking for candidates with first class leadership attributes, drive and ambition. The ideal individual will bring experience of providing strategic leadership to a large and complex organisation, a track record of ensuring operations are aligned with customer and stakeholder needs, and experience of international business development. As such, they will be able to demonstrate a network of successful business relationships and contacts at a very senior level in the region as well as, more generally, interpersonal effectiveness and a strategic approach to communication.
