Heriot-Watt is a distinctive university with global reach and a proud history of providing access to education, ideas and solutions that make a real contribution to the world. We are a values-led institution that is truly like no other, with five campuses located around the world that excel in teaching, research, and wider societal impact. This is an exciting time as we celebrate our founding bicentenary and embark on our new strategy, Strategy 2025, to become world-leading in all we do and continue to fulfil our mission to create and exchange knowledge that benefits society. Named as ‘International University of the Year’ in the 2018 Times and Sunday Times University Guide, we are specialists in engineering, business and science and leaders in innovative global education for a future world.

We are now seeking an exceptional individual to lead the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences (MACS) as we look set to continue our successful strategy placing us at the leading edge in our disciplines. MACS is a truly global school with an annual turnover of around £30M, and nearly 3,000 students in Scotland (60%), Dubai (20%) and Malaysia (20%). The School’s portfolio of taught programmes spans the spectrum of mathematical and computer sciences and reflects its research strengths. It is home to the first programme in Actuarial Mathematics in the UK and the first programme in Computer Science in Scotland. It also offers intradisciplinary programmes, such as in data science, bringing together computational, statistical, and mathematical aspects. MACS is home to approximately 100 research-active staff and has particularly strong groups in robotics and artificial intelligence, and in actuarial and applied mathematics.

This is an exciting and unique opportunity, and we are looking for candidates with the drive, enthusiasm, and vision to help us realise our aspirations for the University and to shape the future. In addition to a strong internationally recognised academic track record, you will be an inspirational leader with excellent management, interpersonal and collaborative skills. Providing an outstanding student and staff experience, fostering world-class research and scholarship, and enhancing the reputation of the university in the UK and overseas will be at the very heart of what you do.

We value diversity and welcome applications from all sections of the community. We particularly welcome applications from women and those from ethnic minority communities as they are underrepresented in the Heriot-Watt’s workforce at this level.
