The Scottish Funding Council (SFC) exists to make Scotland a world leading centre of education, research and innovation by investing £2 billion of public money each year, across Scotland’s 26 colleges and 19 universities. This funding enables Scotland’s colleges and universities to provide life-changing opportunities for over half a million people.
SFC’s support for university research means every one of Scotland’s universities is able to carry out world-leading research. Our investment of over £120million to create innovation centres is making exciting things happen between industry and university research. Our work in widening access is bringing colleges and universities together in new ways and providing more people with more routes into learning and skills. As a result of this, we are now looking to add further strength to our senior leadership team with the addition of several newly created positions.
The Director of Research & Innovation (R&I) will work with key stakeholders at Scotland and UK levels to shape and deliver the strategies, infrastructure and investment that will secure excellent, impactful, connected and sustainable research and innovation in Scotland, now and into the future. The Director will also act as a key member of SFC’s executive leadership team, making a significant contribution to the development of the organisation through a period of re-investment and expansion.
This is an exciting opportunity to lead Scotland’s research infrastructure and work across Scottish and UK funding systems. The successful candidate will bring an outstanding track record as a senior leader within a research-active environment. You will bring a deep understanding of the research and innovation landscape in Scotland and across the UK as well as detailed knowledge of the barriers and opportunities facing R&I activity. You will also bring political awareness and a track record of forging collaborative relationships with a diverse network of stakeholders including academics, colleagues across the public sector and members of the wider R&I community. Likewise, you will be able to demonstrate experience of inspiring and motivating a professional team, building capability and capacity.
