Foreign & Commonwealth Office
Chief Economist and Director, Economics
Up to £120,000

Top quality economic advice is essential for Government departments to meet their objectives in the UK and overseas. In foreign policy, economic analysis is central to increasing national prosperity and maintaining our security, tackling questions such as EU competitiveness, imposition of sanctions, the implications of oil price shifts, the balance between developed and emerging economies in the UK’s approach to meeting export targets and where new opportunities lie.

The role of Chief Economist at the FCO is both vital and highly challenging, with a broad scope and opportunity to influence. You will lead a talented team of economists and provide strategic advice across the FCO and to the highest echelons of HM Government, drawing on advice from the FCO’s network of over 200 overseas posts and access to senior decision makers in multilateral organisations.

You are already a first class macroeconomist, ideally with experience of international economic policy issues. You are successful in your own field but with a strong desire to make a broader contribution, in particular using economics to inform international policy making. You are a clear and succinct communicator, who can adapt their message to a range of audiences.
