Provide leadership and direction for data science activity within Network Rail, promoting the potential for data science and machine learning to develop insights and improve decision making.  Collaborate with business domain experts, identifying opportunities to improve business performance through data exploitation and leading
delivery of these initiatives.  Lead the development of data science as a professional discipline working with other parts of Network Rail.

Key Accountabilities

Define and communicate strategy, standards, guidelines, governance to enable data driven decision making across the organisation

Lead and inspire senior stakeholders across the organisation on the business potential of data science to provide insight and improve decision making

Identify and champion opportunities to improve business performance through application of data science and machine learning

Priorities, scope and manage data science initiatives to deliver the key performance indicators for success

Lead and manage a team in the delivery of data science initiatives including data preparation, model development and deployment

Lead development of data science community to promote professional development, share learning and encourage adoption of good practice

Support development of data literacy across the organisation to promote wider exploitation of data to enhance business performance

Provide expert guidance to other data science initiatives as required, assuring these are shaped appropriately to deliver value

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications


Ability to demonstrate a broad and deep knowledge in the field of Data Science and Advanced Analytics

Degree and appropriate postgraduate qualification in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Operations Research or related subjects

Knowledge and experience in statistical and data mining techniques and frameworks

Experience of initiating and delivering data science and machine learning projects with significant business value

Experience of establishing, leading and developing data science teams

Experience of one or more appropriate programming languages (e.g. R, Python, Scala) and machine learning platforms

In-depth knowledge of current trends in data science and machine learning

Ability to work in an interdisciplinary, multi-stakeholder environment

Ability to create and deliver clear communication of outcomes


A PhD in computational methods, mathematical science, operational research or

Knowledge of/experience in rail or related industry
