The University is seeking a new Chair of Court and welcomes expressions of interest from individuals with a strong track record of senior leadership and effective governance at board level in a large, complex organisation. This is a high-profile role for a Chair who can provide compelling leadership and good governance, championing our values-led approach and placing the wellbeing of our students and staff at the heart of everything we do.

Heriot-Watt offers this opportunity at an exciting time as we celebrate our founding bicentenary and progress our strategy to become world-leading in all we do and fulfil our mission to create and exchange knowledge that benefits society. Heriot-Watt is a distinctive, globally connected university with a proud heritage of providing access to education, ideas and solutions that make a real difference in the world. With an annual turnover of £235m and five campuses in Scotland, Malaysia and Dubai, we are an institution that is truly like no other, excelling in teaching, research, and wider societal impact. We are specialists in engineering, business and science and leaders in innovative global education for a future world.

The Court is the governing body of the University, responsible for the conduct of all areas of business, strategic development and overall achievement of the University’s mission in line with its values. The Chair of Court will provide effective leadership and promote the efficient and effective operation of Court and its committees. The Chair will also be an ambassador for the University across all its locations, bringing the gravitas, insight, experience and personal and political skills to build positive and constructive relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.

We value diversity and welcome applications from all sections of the community. We particularly welcome applications from women and from persons from communities that are often under-represented at Board level in Scotland.

Heriot-Watt has appointed executive search specialists Veredus to support us with this appointment. For further information about the role and to apply, please see Supporting Documentation below.

The appointment is made in accordance with the Higher Education Governance (Scotland) Act 2016. All candidates who appear to meet the criteria for the post will be invited for interview and, after that selection process, all candidates who are deemed to meet the criteria will be invited to stand for election (subject to acceptance of the terms and conditions).
