The University of Edinburgh is a world-leading centre of academic excellence and innovation, placed 16th in the 2022 QS rankings of global universities. With a history dating back to 1583, we are the English-speaking world’s first civic university and Scotland’s largest, generating a turnover of more than £1.2 billion each year. We provide an outstanding learning environment for our 45,000 students. As a world-leading research-intensive University, placed 4th by research power in the UK’s recent Research Excellence Framework, our 15,000 staff address tomorrow’s greatest challenges.

Born in the University of Edinburgh, Smart Data Foundry is a mission-led organisation, initiated by a prestigious £22.5m ‘Strength-in-Places’ award from UKRI. It aims to unlock the power of financial data to improve people’s lives. It is a unique, independent collaboration between governments and regulators, the financial services, industry and academia. The Foundry brings together the University of Edinburgh, other universities in Central Scotland, the Financial Data and Technology Association, and Fintech Scotland to harness financial data for societal and economic benefit. The Foundry already holds extensive data from major financial organisations and has used these to address key challenges from financial inclusion to the impacts of COVID-19.

We are now seeking to appoint an exceptional individual as the Academic Chair of Global Open Finance. Hosted in the University of Edinburgh Business School, you will develop the vision for a world-leading, sustainable programme of research, innovation, education, and external engagement in Open Finance. You will implement this vision in collaboration with Schools and Colleges across the University and beyond, ensuring the relevance of this programme to Smart Data Foundry, local and global financial services and fintech organisations, regulators and Governments.

This is a unique opportunity to drive evidence-based outcomes that will challenge and inform policy and regulation, energise and accelerate innovation across the fintech sector, and help support the delivery of new products and services. Whilst the role is centered on topics such as Open Finance data and Open Finance regulation, significant opportunities exist to research and innovate at the intersections of emerging disciplines such as Health and Finance and to address major industry challenges such as Net-Zero finance and financial inclusion, leveraging data from other sectors to transform financial services.

You will have an outstanding profile, either in an academic or an academic-business setting, with a proven record of developing and delivering boundary breaking research, innovation, and collaborations. You will have led internationally-outstanding contributions to Open Finance or a related field, and a consistent record of attracting substantial research funding. A collegial team player with excellent interpersonal skills, you will have a proven ability to energise and inspire stakeholders at all levels to deliver tangible and high impact outputs of cross-disciplinary value.

We continue to embrace diversity of thought and opinion in everything we do and welcome applications from all sections of the community.
