Supporting the Not for Profit Sector to grow through inspired leadership

The Not for Profit Sector (NFP) is facing significant change and challenges. Cuts to statutory funding and policy shifts are requiring new ways of working, new sector relationships and new skill sets. The organisations that will stand out will be those that value innovation and leadership.

Veredus stands out from our competitors because our teams comprise of people who come from the sector. This means that our professional recruitment services are combined with empathy with the mission and values of our clients, an in-depth understanding of the political and public policy context and the broadest networks in the NFP and beyond. We see ourselves as part of a strategic solution and not just a recruitment process, and are regularly commissioned to conduct the search and selection for senior leaders or to provide transitional leadership in organisations of all sizes.

Our track record

Our success in supporting the NFP sector to confront new social and financial challenges is proven by the extensive wide-ranging assignments that we have successfully contributed to. We have a particularly strong track record in recruiting Chairs, Trustees, Chief Executives and Director level positions.

For example, over the past 12 months we have recruited the Chair of: Guide Dogs, Friends of the Earth, VSO, Contact a Family, ActionAid UK, Independent Age and of the NCVO. Our Chief Executive appointments include: Internet Watch Foundation, Carers UK, Dyslexia Action and National Skills Academy for Social Care and our Director positions include: Executive Director of Operations for Action for Children, Director of External Affairs for Age UK, Director of Policy and Public Affairs for Marie Curie Cancer Care, Director of Resources for World Society for the Protection of Animals, Director of Finance for Arthritis UK, multiple Director roles for Scope and many more.
In addition, we have a highly successful track record in appointing interim managers. For example, we recruited the interim Chief Executive of Shelter, Platform 51, the YHA, The Arts Council Wales, Relate, the Electoral Reform Society and others.

Developing talent and capability within the sector is something we take very seriously and we participate in national forums which shape the leadership of the future such as at the NCVO Trustee Conference which explored the value of a structured approach to understanding the roles, needs and competencies required to be an effective trustee.

Our scope and success

Our cross sector understanding is extensive. For example Katy Giddens, Director and UK lead for the Not for Profit Practice brings a background of working in a national arts organisation and we have supported appointments which will shape major cultural organisations with the confidence and expertise that comes from knowing the sector inside out.

In addition, we have handled the appointment of key roles at the BFI and the National Gallery, Tate, Historic Royal Palaces, and Alnwick Castle and Gardens. We understand how introducing skills and attitudes from different sectors can transform organisations. For Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Northumberland, we recruited a Chief Executive with a brief to build on its huge heritage value, and create a ‘must see’ visitor attraction. The successful candidate came from a VP role in the Disney Corporation, following an international search.

We are proud of the work we do in supporting talent with our sectors, and we played an active part in the Arts Council England’s Hothouse Programme, which works with artists and creative professionals from diverse communities to provide support and mentoring for successful careers within the arts and creative industries.

Similarly for sports bodies, we have recruited the Chair and Director of Finance for Sport England, the Secretary General of FA Wales, the Head of Marketing for the Sports Council of Wales and the first Director of Inspired by Sport, the foundation established by entrepreneur Sir Keith Mills to support community sports groups and create a step change in the level of sports participation.

Moreover, we also work with the new pioneers in the NFP sector, such as social enterprises, and have worked in partnership with NESTA, appointing a group of trustees to bring thinking from a range of backgrounds including the arts, broadcasting and technology. We also recruited the first Executive Director of WEConnect, a very different social enterprise which connects women-owned businesses with multinational corporations.

Finally, our reach and experience also includes working with Housing Associations and Grant Making organisations and we have a strong reputation working for trusts and foundations which has included, among other assignments, the interim ‘in-country’ role in Kenya for the Wellcome Trust, the Founding Chair and Trustees of the Nominet Trust, and the Chair of the Edge Foundation.
