Chair, Sustainable Development Commission
£400 per diem subject to review
Sustainable development affects all of us. The decisions we make now about our environment, our economy and our infrastructure will have a fundamental impact on our lives today, and on the lives of future generations.
The Government is committed to putting sustainable development at the heart of national policy. The Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) has a key role as a catalyst for change. Working across government in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the SDC is an independent adviser and powerful advocate.
Since it was established in 2000, and under the chairmanship of Jonathon Porritt, the Commission has established strong relationships with Government departments, Devolved Administrations and wider society and has successfully influenced Government policy. Recent achievements include the Government’s creation of a Centre of Expertise in Sustainable Procurement, in response to SDC recommendations, and SDC reports contributing to the debates on tidal power and food policy.
The SDC has grown in size and stature and will soon become an executive non-departmental public body to match its expanded responsibility. It now needs a new Chair to build on its success so far and take it into the future.
This role calls for someone with a passion for sustainable development and its implementation. You will have a strong track record of leadership, personal credibility in this field and the right communication skills to inspire and influence others to contribute to a sustainable future.
This is a part-time role leading a non-departmental public body, to begin in August 2009. The appointment will be approved by the Prime Minister.
